Light in Gardening and Gardens

Light

Light from the sun is one of the most important factors in your garden. Without light your plants would not grow and would die off. However all Is not lost if you have a shady garden - in the wild, light conditions vary enormously, and plants have evolved over the years to adapt to different levels of light.

The amount of light your garden receives will depend on the aspect - North facing gardens will get the least amount of light with South getting the most amount of light. East facing gardens will get the morning light with West facing gardens getting afternoon and evening light. Get a compass and find out what the aspect of your garden is.

Plants for shady north facing gardens include Fern, Periwinkle, Camellia and Mahonia.

Plants for east and west facing partially shaded gardens include Hosta, Magnolia, Cyclamen, and Hydrangea.

Plants for sunny south facing gardens include Cistus, Rock Rose, Lavender and Jerusalem Sage.
