Temperature and Gardening
As well as available light and water, temperature will also play a crucial role in your plant choice and will influence how well your plants thrive in your garden. Some plants come from tropical climates where there are warm temperatures all year round, while others come from more temperate regions where the climate can change depending on the season.
You will need to take this into account when choosing your plants - for example if your garden is north facing and susceptible to heavy frost in the winter, you will want to ensure you choose plants that can tolerate these conditions, or else you could be in for some disappointment!
Hardy plants refer to plants that will survive pretty much anything! They include wild daffodil, Buddleia and holly.
Frost hardy plants will tolerate temperatures down to about -5 degrees Celsius. That said it is always advisable to protect them as much as possible, or bring them in over winter. They include Pampas Grass, Red Hot Poker and Hardy Fuchsia.
Half Hardy plants are tough, but they won't survive extreme or prolonged frosts. They include Soft Tree Fern, Busy Lizzie and Petunia.
Frost tender plants will not survive a harsh winter and will need bringing inside before the frosts start and re plant outside once the frosts have passed. These include Morning Glory, Dahlia and Begonia.
