Windy Gardens

Wind in the Garden

Whilst not as critical as sun, rain and temperature - The direction in which the wind in your garden typically blows will ultimately influence your plant choice in your garden.

Generally speaking northerly and easterly winds are cold, while westerly and southerly winds are warmer, but stronger.

Aspects to consider with wind are sudden strong winds potentially snapping branches, or deforming growth, cold winds may burn fragile new plants leaving it brown.

It may be worth considering hedging areas of your garden to protect the borders from the damaging effects of wind - good hedging plants include Holly, Yew and Laurel. Wind tolerant plants include Tamarisk, wild Black Cherry and Daisy Bush.
